We are now in the middle of developing our Magical Machine. One of the challenges is getting the color schemes right. We have different area’s children can try out. We noticed that to get a common look and feel requires having:

A consistent coloring scheme for rooms that have the same theme.

Using certain colors throughout all screens to give a familiar feeling.

Clear color coding for interaction elements.

Making sure we don’t loose our nice graphical style in the process.

When we started experimenting with the background colors we noticed how they can either help giving us a clear picture or create a total chaos. Here is a quick peek of some of our try outs.

Let us know what your experiences are with color schemes.

“Princess Arabella wants to play” was released on the iPhone and the iPod touch earlier this summer and now Rumdeedum’s interactive children’s book is available for the iPad.

Learn, play and read
In the story “Princess Arabella wants to play”, children go on a journey of discovery with Princess Arabella and her dog Ziggy. Princess Arabella meets all kinds of animals and makes lots of new friends. But a little Princess off on an adventure all alone? Will she be alright? Her parents the King and Queen are quite worried, but Princess Arabella manages just fine, and everything comes to a surprising but happy end. “Princess Arabella wants to play” is aimed at children from the ages 4 to 10. It’s a lovely adventure to read yourself, or you can listen to the beautiful voice of the storyteller. The story comes to life through extra features like music, sound effects and hidden animations on every page.

Princess Arabella grows up
“Princess Arabella wants to play” attracted considerable attention as an interactive story on the iPhone and iPod touch, and now the interactive book is available on the iPad. The high resolution of the iPad brings the hand-painted watercolors even more vividly to life, and the iPad allows the reader to read the entire text for themselves, with still the option for younger readers to read a simplified version of the story.

Princess who?
Writer and illustrator Mylo Freeman came up with the idea for Princess Arabella when she heard how an Afro-American girl had turned down the leading role in a play because “there aren’t any black princesses”. The way forward was obvious to Freeman: she would write a picture book about a black princess herself. That turned out to be Princess Arabella, a plucky black princess with a taste for adventure. There is a whole series of successful books about the strong willed princess. And with the arrival of the interactive book on the iPad, Princess Arabella is taking another step into the future.

‘Princess Arabella wants to play’, interactive children’s book by RumdeeDum for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch
Once upon a time there was a little princess named Arabella. After several adventures in books she decided that it was time for a change. The time had come for Arabella to start a new adventure on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The adventure began when she met RumdeeDum (http://www.rumdeedum.com).

Debut on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch
Arabella will make her debut on iPhone, iPad en iPod touch this summer. ‘Princess Arabella wants to play’ is one of the first interactive children’s books with animations on the iPad. The interactive book presents a new story and has been specially developed for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The story has been written and created for children from the ages four till ten.
‘Princess Arabella wants to play’ is the perfect story to read on long drives or to cuddle up with on the couch at home.

Princess who…?
Princess Arabella was created by writer and illustrator, Mylo Freeman. Freeman had heard about a little African American girl who was offered to play the role of a princess in her school play. But the girl refused the part. ‘There’s no such thing as a black princess, there’s no way I can play that part!’, she said. To Freeman it was obvious: the world needed a story about a black princess. She created a picture book about a little, strong willed princess called Arabella. So far only printed books about Princess Arabella have been released and with the interactive book on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch Arabella is becoming a really ambitious little girl.

Listen or read it yourself
The story comes to life through extra features like music, sound effects and animations. By touching the screen, children discover the hidden surprises and animations in this wonderful story. The interactive book can be read in many different ways. Parents or children can use the short text to narrate the story in their own words. Children can also listen to the pre-recorded storyteller. Young readers can read the short text, and on the iPad, more experienced readers can read the complete story. The interactive book is available in English and Dutch.

More about Arabella
This Princess Arabella version for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch is the first in this series. More games and stories are planned for this fall. Please visit the publishers website www.rumdeedum.com for more information on Princess Arabella and a preview of ‘Princess Arabella wants to play’.
